Learning to Love as He Loved

With all the tension and conflict in our world right now, I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of following Christ’s example to love everyone—not just those who think like we do or agree with us politically, religiously, or socially. That kind of love is easy to talk about but much harder to practice. I’ve wrestled with how to balance the commandment to be a peacemaker with the commandment to stand for truth and righteousness, and at times I’ve caught myself thinking it might be easier to avoid hard conversations with people I love but deeply disagree with. Yet the Savior reminds us, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
Growing up watching Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, I remember his gentle counsel to “look for the helpers” during difficult times. Somewhere along the way, I decided I didn’t just want to look for helpers—I wanted to be one. As we more intentionally remember Jesus Christ, I can think of no better way to honor Him than by striving to love as He loved: finding common ground through service, looking for opportunities to comfort those who feel afraid or unheard, and approaching others with humility and curiosity. When unkind or divisive thoughts creep in, may we refocus on choosing love, extending grace, and serving others—just as He did.
